Biotechnology is the vocational discipline of molecular biology, and the programme focuses on the application of biotechnological sciences in five main fields:<\/p>

Medical Biotechnology.<\/strong><\/u><\/p>

This includes the advanced applications of biotechnology in medical fields including;<\/p>

\u2022 Gene Therapy (including Genetic Disorders, Gene Target Selection, Gene Delivery Methods, Viral vectors)<\/p>

\u2022 Stem Cells (including Therapeutic Cloning and Embryonic Stem Cells)<\/p>

\u2022 Production of vaccines<\/p>

\u2022 Monoclonal Antibodies.<\/p>

\u2022 Drug discovery and development.<\/p>

Agricultural Biotechnology.<\/strong><\/u><\/p>

This includes the applications of biotechnology in the agricultural field, including;<\/p>

\u2022 Producing transgenic plants resistant to indigenous biotic and abiotic stress.<\/p>

\u2022 Reducing the use of agrochemicals and pesticides, and their environmental risks.<\/p>

\u2022 Tissue culture for producing plant-free virus and for plant propagation.<\/p>

Environmental Biotechnology:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>

This focuses on the applications of biotechnology in solving environmental problems including;<\/p>

\u2022 Waste water purification, potable water production, solid waste treatment and soil and sediment clean-up.<\/p>

\u2022 New developments; biopesticides, bioremediation of recalcitrant pollutants and biosensors for environmental monitoring.<\/p>

Pharmaceutical biotechnology:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>

The application of biotechnology for pharmaceutical biotechnology majorly includes<\/p>

\u2022 Manufacturing drugs, gene therapy as well as gene testing. This is done by manipulating and modifying organisms, usually at the molecular level,<\/p>

\u2022 Bioformulations, such as antibodies, nucleic acid products and vaccines.<\/p>

\u2022 Designing stable and effective therapeutic proteins requires knowledge of protein structure and the interactions that stabilise the structure necessary for function.<\/p>

The future of pharmaceuticals belongs to protein-based therapeutics.<\/p>

Molecular Criminology:<\/strong><\/u><\/p>

The application of biotechnology for Molecular Criminology majorly includes<\/p>

\u2022 Forensic Research Identification Methods,<\/p>

\u2022 A bachelor\u2019s degree in any of the natural sciences, science, medicine, pharmacy, agriculture, or veterinary.<\/p>

\u2022 General grade GPA 2.8, a grade \u2018Good\u2019 or equivalent.<\/p>

\u2022 Proof of skills in English: The following minimum scores are required:<\/p>
